Pro-tecting Building for Better Care

An innovative model for patient care will be delivered in Ayrshire with the redesign and extension of ‘front door’ facilities at University Hospitals Ayr and Crosshouse.

And the innovative approach extends to the roofs, to create a fit-for-purpose physical environment through which the Building for Better Care (BfBC) programme will be achieved for NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

Roofing contractor WF Price (Roofing) Ltd for the programme’s principal supply chain partner BAM Construction has used some 1400m2 of Protan SE1.2mm substrate for the mechanically-fixed single ply flat roofing elements of the two sites.

Approximately 600m2 was used at University Hospital Crosshouse, on the formation of the new Combined Assessment Unit; a further 850m2 was utilised at University Hospital Ayr to reconfigure and extend the existing A&E & Combined Assessment Unit. The new facilities will be open in February 2016 and March 2017 respectively.

“The BfBC programme is all about delivering modern, fit-for-purpose facilities for ‘front door’ services and making better use of resources.” explained Andy Brown, Senior Project Manager for NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

Added WF Price (Roofing) Ltd’s Derek Price, “The specification actually proposed an alternative membrane, but we felt- and the BfBC partners agreed- that Protan’s membrane delivered more in line with the whole programme concept of improved efficiency.”

Protan SE single ply membrane, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations.

Protan SE membrane is also certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating.

Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. Manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Norway, Protan has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation.
