Protan Radon Safe is a polyesterreinforced thermoplastic polyolefin membrane that protects buildings from radon from the ground. The membrane construction ensures a good seal against radon as well as a long-lasting and secure installation. Protan Radon Safe membrane, corners and ducts are welded together using hot air. The selection of this material and welding method ensures homogeneous joints that are completely gas tight and strong. Radon is an invisible and odour free gas that forms continuously on the earth's crust. Normally, there is a low concentration of radon outside. The health risk first becomes apparent when the gas seeps in and collects in our indoor environments.
Radon is a gas that is formed in connection with radioactive decay of uranium and thorium. The gas is present in various concentrations in certain rock types. The Nordic countries have the world’s highest concentration of radon in indoor air. This is due to special geographic conditions, climatic conditions and local building traditions.
Large differences between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, particularly during winter, have a tenancy to increase the concentration of radon gasses in buildings. The recommended concentration of radon in houses should not exceed 200 Bq/m3 (becquerel).
