Ashbridge Nursery, Preston

Protecting Long-Term Investment

Protecting a £1.4m long-term investment should be plain sailing through use of state-of-the-art technology at a new pre-school nursery.

The advanced technology applies not only to the education and care provision, but extends through to the building design and materials, according to owner Stuart Carr. He, and his architects Bramley Pate & Partners, capitalised on the site’s location next top the River Ribble in Ashbridge, Preston to create a three-storey, 100-place nursery that looks like an ocean liner. Thus, the stainless steel and aluminium structure is complimented by ‘maritime grey’ Protan SE1.6mm single ply membrane across the seven curving and monopitch roof areas.

Mechanically fixed- by John Robinson Building Contractors- over OSB and Protan VB250 vapour control layer, the Protan SE 1.6mm standard overlap system will protect the children, staff and contents below against the elements for decades to come.

“The whole essence of the nursery is state-of-the-art quality, mirroring that at its associated Ashbridge School, which is Independent Schools Inspectorate rated as excellent,” explained Stuart Carr. “I wanted the best materials and equipment, and view the whole project as a long-term investment.”

Added Mark Robinson of John Robinson, “Single ply was specified for the project, for its ability to accommodate the flowing roof shapes. We chose Protan for its combination of quality, cost-competitiveness, and technical support.”

Protan SE is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations. It also helps deliver the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating.

Established over 75 years ago, Protan is one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of single ply membranes. Its materials, including Protan SE membrane, are BBA, Sintef and IAB certified and approved. Protan UK, based at Warrington delivers a full support service, from NBS specification through to technical advice. The company is a member of SPRA, demonstrating the company’s commitment to the improvement of single ply roofing materials and their installation..
