Pro-tecting Better Healthcare

A robust strategy to help realise a best practice installation solution is enabling Protan to play a key role in the building of one of Scotland’s biggest current healthcare construction projects.

Balfour Beatty is the main contractor on the £46million new 16,000m2 Woodland View acute mental health & community facility in North Ayrshire, due for completion in Spring 2016.

Sub-contractor McKay Roofing has turned to Protan to efficiently construct the roofs of the three predominantly single-storey main buildings, laid out around 10 large courtyards and six smaller landscaped areas.

McKay has used over 2,500m2 of Protan SE1.8mm single ply PVC standard overlap membrane, which was mechanically fixed over Protan VB250 vapour control layer and Protan F2B polypropylene protection fleece.

“It is a complex build, with a combination of warm and cold roofs, with galvanised steel and plywood roof decks. An alternative main membrane was originally specified; to ensure the building envelope performs within affordability requirements yet delivers quality assurance requirements on durability, it was agreed among the team, on McKay’s recommendation, to use Protan,” explained Protan sales manager Andy Nelson.

“The project involves build-up of various main roofs and canopies. From the original concept, the design team aimed to provide a best practice, robust design solution. McKays view was that they know from experience that Protan deliver from a roofing point of view. It gives them, from one source, the quality of materials needed, will be easy to handle and detail around penetrations, and will deliver the longevity demanded.”

Protan SE single ply membrane, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations.

Protan SE membrane is also certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Building Regulations Approved Document L (Scottish Building Regulations Section 6), and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating.

Protan VB250 delivers a water vapour resistance of 0.35 g/m²/day, to BS 3177. At 140g/m2, Protan F2B protection fleece removes any risk of potential mechanical or chemical damage from the substrate.

Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. Manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Norway, Protan has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation.
