Brechin Community Campus
A £26m community campus has been completed ahead of schedule, helped by unique, advanced roofing techniques.
The 11,200m2, three-level Brechin Community Campus has been designed and built- by jmarchitects with infrastructure group Robertson Construction- to be a landmark contemporary and sustainable teaching environment for up to 800 pupils. The L-shaped roof of the glass and concrete main structure has been weather-rpoofed, by WF Price Roofing, using 2,600m2 of light grey Protan SE 1.2mm single ply membrane, on top of a concrete slab, thermal insulation and Protan VB250 vapour control layer.
Innovatively, the Protan single ply membrane was delivered to site prefabricated, in roll widths of 3.96m, ready for mechanical fixing.
“Our ability to prefabricate was a key factor in our selection for the project,” explained Protan’s Andy Nelson. “No other single ply manufacturer can deliver that service. We calculate the most cost-efficient use of membrane, and in our controlled factory environment create the rolls of material to correspond, without the impact of site issues such as weather, debris and workmanship. It massively accelerates roof construction time, significantly reducing the amount of cutting, welding, and waste on site.”
Case studies show that Protan’s prefabricated roof process can cut seam welding by up to 70%: on a typical 10000m2 roof: that can equate to 5,000 linear metres LESS welding, and around 800m2 less membrane than standard systems. Yet the Protan prefabricated system is cost-competitive with standard single ply roof membrane, even before the latter’s welding costs are factored in.
The prefabricated system is offered on all Protan SE membranes. Protan SE single ply membrane, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations.
Protan SE membrane is also certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating.
Protan SE is one element of the company’s comprehensive range of single ply roofing solutions, covered at www.protan.co.uk, all designed to protect value for specifier and contractor.
Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. Manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Norway, Protan has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation.
A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice and variable warranty depending on specification is provided from the company’s Warrington headquarters.
