Protan Helps Joy-ous Expansion

One of the world’s leading mining solutions providers is assured its new UK hub will help deliver advanced solutions.

Joy Global’s new £10million, 25,000m2 production and testing facility at Logistics North, near Bolton, designed by APL Architects and Healy Consulting, has been built by main contractor Russells Construction. As part of the design & build contract, Range Roofing advised and installed 2300m2 of Protan EX-A single ply membrane, adhered to the roof.

The new facility gives 4000m2 manufacturing space and 3500m2 office accommodation. The purpose-designed and built facility includes bespoke elements to allow for testing of heavy mining equipment and machinery, which can weight up to 100 tonnes and bear loads of up to 2,500 tonnes.

Reflecting the ethos of the building below, of solutions for extreme environments, the Protan membrane was developed to exceed the severe conditions of Scandinavian winter, and was installed during one of the wettest periods contractor Range Roofing had ever encountered.

“The roof at Joy was such a large area, in an exposed location, that we felt that the added insulation provided with Protan EX-A, it being fleece-backed, was the most appropriate solution,” observed Range Roofing’s Craig Stockton. “We have a good relationship with Protan, and from experience have fewer problems, especially leaks, compared to other membranes. It’s also very competitively priced.”

Added Russells Construction director Andrew Rusell, “We’ve put together a team with vast experience of large industrial scheme and bespoke high-tech facilities to deliver this programme. Range Roofing and Protan were important elements of that team.”

Protan EX-A is a polyester reinforced PVC membrane with an insulating polyester fleece laminated to the underside. It has a unique anti-slip surface, providing additional safety if being installed in wet weather. It is the only system available from Protan that uses adhesives. Protan EX-A, as all Protan membranes, is certified to ≤ -30°C and proven in practice to last 30+ years.

Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top three membrane manufacturers in Europe. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
