Pro-tecting Best Value for Leisure Facilities

East Staffordshire Borough Council is delivering best value in leisure provision through the redevelopment of Uttoxeter Leisure Centre.

Uttoxeter’s future leisure needs will be protected long term, via the Council’s use of Protan single ply roofing membrane. Some 2000m2 of mechanically fixed dark grey Protan SE1.6mm standard overlap membrane has been used to create a new roof over the upgraded and extended facility.

Under the scheme, the existing sports hall and pool tank have been retained, with a new steel frame block added, comprising male/female changing, fitness facility, dance studio, café, crèche and spectator viewing facilities.

‘Retaining and upgrading existing, and adding new facilities was deemed the most appropriate option to meet the future leisure/sports needs of the Borough,” explained Mark Rizk, East Staffordshire Borough Council Shared Services Manager. “The £3.9million investment will mean the existing Centre will be changed out of all recognition. A new roof was a key criterium from the outset to extend the existing building’s life as long as possible.”

Added Jag Rai, managing director of roofing contractor Phase 9 Roofing, “Single ply was specified, I proposed Protan as it is more aesthetically pleasing than competitive materials, is good to work with and price competitive. Its superior quality and longevity, with the technical support Protan and I brought convinced the client that best value would be achieved all round using the material.”

Protan SE, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations. Protan SE membrane is also certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating.

Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. Manufactured at the company’s headquarters in Norway, Protan has roofs that have been in place for 30+ years without performance-affecting degradation. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
