Newburgh House, Swindon
Swindon Borough Council is delivering quality care to its tenants, through to its maintenance of housing stock.
The Authority’s Newburgh House development, of 43 no extra care flats and a further 10 no extra care bungalows, was originally built in the 1960s, and needed re-roofing. The best value solution has been to use 1.5mm thick fleece-backed Protan EX-A adhered system, installed directly onto the existing concrete deck by contractor Williams Roofing.
“It delivered on all fronts,” explained Williams Roofing’s Simon Cross. “The Council wanted an adhered system in place of the original felt, to improve longevity, and minimise the noise and disruption that residents would be subjected to if a mechanically-fixed option had been employed.
“The fleece backing that is an integral part of Protan’s EX-A system helped supplement the insulation, which we increased anyway, to help improve the building’s thermal performance on that it achieved when initially built.”
Added Paul Hewer, Swindon Borough Council senior project surveyor, “The contract went to tender; Williams Roofing gave us the best value solution in terms of overall cost of the project, and the roof’s performance over time.”
EX-A is the only system available from Protan that uses adhesives, and is particularly suited to refurbishment projects. Protan EX-A membrane has a proven durability of 30+ years, and is quick to install.
Like all Protan’s single ply membranes, EX-A is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Protan membrane achieve durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled in line with latest Building Regulations. Protan SE single ply membrane, which also forms part of Protan’s offering, is certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating.
Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
